everyone's a philosopher

spring has arrived and along with it the casualties of winter begin to pile up. spring cleaning, and i don't think they just mean your home. when everything gets a new birth, a new start, a new beginning - it begs to suggest that perhaps we are also given the chance to start things anew. the past few weeks have been spent in preparation for this new day, this new moment. we could choose any arbitrary day to start our rebeginning - but it is spring which offers a beautiful metaphor for this metaphysical process.

so as i begin this new year - the dust that has settled in the winter months is getting blown away by the warm mountain breezes and i am hoping for a cleaner slate than i had last year. that way, i have a whole new year to make it just as dirty...

what is bleach in hebrew?

so let me just tell you about what happened yesterday.
as happens, i decided that while i was cleaning the kitchen, i might as well stop by my bathroom to tidy things up. i go to the shelf with the cleaning supplies and grab the usual - windex, ajax. then, i realize that perhaps i should try a stronger cleaning agent for my shower. i reach for a white plastic bottle with a picture of shower tiles on the front. surrounded by hebrew, in english are the words "mildew stain remover" and i think - this will work.
i turn the bottle around to see if there are any further instructions or warnings which i can understand and see only a few words in english which describe its application.
i then open up the bottle and smell the contents, looking for substances which may cause discoloration to clothing - such as bleach. i don't smell any, so i think to myself, it must be safe to proceed with the aforementioned cleaning process.
so there i am. confident that my lack of hebrew-reading skills has not caused the least bit of a problem because my nose seems to be functioning and the limited english on the label has not mentioned bleach. i start to clean. i soak the shower tiles with the "mildew stain remover" and walk out of the bathroom, to allow for it to soak in and do some deep cleaning. as i walk out of the bathroom, i glance down at my pants - only to find that what was once olive green has now turned splotchy white. my lower abdomen and both of my legs are covered in small white polka dot-esque marks, which symbolize to me nothing more than my lack of hebrew and bring words of vulgarity streaming out of my mouth. $&%$(&#*@#(@&!!!!!!
just another day in the life of a foreigner in a foreign land. and that is the last time i rely on my nose to tell me what is going on.
